A Weekend Getaway To Stonington, Connecticut

Stonington is a picturesque coastal town nestled in the southeastern corner of Connecticut. The town is overflowing with charm, with its historic architecture, stunning views of the harbor, and quaint downtown. I spent a weekend in Stonington during the offseason and it was the perfect relaxing escape.

Where to Stay

The Inn at Stonington is an 18-room inn sits right on the Stonington Harbor in the charming village of Stonington Borough. It’s steps away from amazing restaurants, shops, galleries, and stunning water views. Each room at the inn is cozy and comfortable, with many of them featuring a gas fireplace, luxurious bathrooms with a soaking tub, and in the seaside rooms, you have a private balcony with views of the harbor and Fisher Island Sound. Great for sunset viewing!

In addition to the beautiful rooms, the inn offers a complimentary wine and cheese reception each night for guests. I loved grabbing a glass of wine and sitting by the cozy fire in the lobby. They also offer a complimentary continental breakfast each morning. I absolutely loved my stay here, and look forward to visiting again soon.

With both indoor and outdoor seating options, diners can enjoy stunning views of the harbor while indulging in fresh seafood and delicious cocktails. The cafe also boasts a lively bar scene and is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. My go-to order is a cold lobster roll and a Painkiller cocktail!

  • Stone Acres Farm: If you visit Stonington in the summer months, The Stone Acres Farm Dinners are a must! This is a unique and memorable dining experience set against the picturesque backdrop of Stone Acres Farm. Guests enjoy a pre-fixe menu with farm-to-table dishes featuring seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. The dinners often include a multi-course menu that highlights the farm's produce and showcases the flavors of the region. With its rustic charm and focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients, Stone Acres Farm Dinner provides an intimate and satisfying culinary experience that celebrates the best of local farming.

What to Do

There are many things to see and do in Stonington, whether you're interested in history, art, or nature. Some of my recommendations include:

  • The Stonington Lighthouse Museum: A historic gem that offers a glimpse into the maritime heritage of this picturesque seaside town. Built in 1840, the lighthouse once guided ships safely into Stonington Harbor and now serves as a museum dedicated to the area's rich nautical history. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits featuring artifacts, photographs, and stories that highlight Stonington's role in the whaling, fishing, and shipping industries. The museum's crown jewel is the climb to the top of the lighthouse, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding waters.

  • Stonington Point: Located at the southern tip of Stonington Borough, Stonington Point is a picturesque spot that offers stunning views of the surrounding waters, including Fishers Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. On clear days, you can see the distant shores of Long Island and Rhode Island, making it a favorite spot for photography and birdwatching. Stonington Point is also a great starting point for exploring the charming Stonington Borough, with its quaint shops, historic homes, and inviting cafes just a short walk away.

  • The Velvet Mill: Once a thriving textile mill, it now houses a diverse array of artists' studios, local businesses, galleries, and unique shops. Visitors can explore a wide range of offerings, from handcrafted goods and artisanal foods to fine art and custom furniture. The Velvet Mill is also a cultural destination, hosting events like art shows, farmers' markets, live music, and workshops that bring together the local community and visitors.

  • Local Wineries: Explore the scenic vineyards at Kingdom of the Hawk, Stonington Vineyards, and Saltwater Farm Vineyard. Each offers picturesque settings and a chance to sample delightful wines crafted from local grapes.
